Mckinley Park
Just a couple miles west of Commencement Bay Cannabis – Red at 907 Upper Park St, Mckinley Park is one of the oldest parks in Tacoma. The park has four streams and four wetlands. The largest of the wetlands was enhanced and expanded.
Wetlands are transitional areas between land and water. They support specialized plants and habitats for many fish, birds, and wildlife species. Wetlands contain rich nutrients, absorb stormwater during floods, and clean water by filtering out pollutants and sediment. They are important ecosystems that can help restore the balance for both wildlife and people.
Swan Creek Park
At 3997 E Roosevelt Ave, Swan Creek Park is less than two miles south of Commencement Bay Cannabis. Swan Creek Park is a 290-acre green space with a wooded canyon and forested hills, a salmon-bearing stream, and a new community garden.
This urban oasis has loop hikes that can be several miles in length. The 2.4-mile Swan Creek Trail traverses a sidehill and eventually descends to the creek bottom, while the 1.2-mile Canyon Rim trail stays well above the creek, giving views across the canyon.
Slahal
Less than a mile west on E 29th St, Slahal is located at 1806 E 29th St. Slahal is part of the Emerald Queen Casino and Hotel. This wonderful addition to Tacoma’s upscale dining scene pairs classic cuisine with stunning views of the City, Commencement Bay, Mount Rainier, and the Olympic Mountains.
Riverbank Express
This is another awesome local restaurant less than a mile away in the Emerald Queen Casino and Hotel. This place is big, and so is the menu. You can order just about anything here, including burgers, sandwiches, pho, rice bowls, Thai food, pasta, fish and chips, quesadillas, and so much more. Yum.
Tacoma Art Museum
Cross Interstate 5 and take a left on WA-509 S; you can be at the Tacoma Art Museum in less than 5 minutes. Located on the homelands of the Puyallup Tribe, the museum honors the Puyallup people and Coast Salish communities. The Tacoma Art Museum believes art can transform humanity by inspiring broader perspectives and cultivating compassion.
LeMay – America’s Car Museum
Only 5 minutes west on E 27th St, America’s Car Museum is located at 2702 E D St. This Museum is an international destination to celebrate America’s love affair with the automobile and learn how it shaped our society.
The stunning 165,000 SF venue is recognized as one of MSN’s 10 Best Automotive Museums worldwide, USA Today’s 10 Best Museums in Seattle, and KING5’s Best Museum in Western Washington.
Museum of Glass
Located at 1801 Dock St, The Museum of Glass is less than 2 miles from Commencement Bay Cannabis – Red. The museum is a premier contemporary art museum dedicated to glass and glassmaking in the West Coast’s largest and most active museum glass studio.
The Museum of Glass is renowned for hosting engaging artist residencies, exhibiting national traveling exhibits, and creating unique visitor programs. It also features a growing permanent collection that chronicles the development of modern and contemporary glass.
Ruston Way
Just minutes from the downtown Museum District is Tacoma’s Ruston Way Waterfront. Connecting downtown Tacoma to Point Defiance, this coastal road features a 2-mile walking trail with scenic views of the South Puget Sound that include Mount Rainier to the West, the Olympic Mountain Range to the East, and Commencement Bay.
There are many parks to visit along Ruston Way and when you’re ready to refuel, stop for lunch at The Spar. Point Defiance Park is the largest city park west of the Mississippi River and a must-see. With 702 acres, it features a zoo and aquarium, a rose garden, old growth forest, playgrounds, and a beach.
